Abstract  To investigate automated calibration of piston gauges, a high-precision pressure transducer as an immediate in-situ transfer standard was introduced. Experiments were carried out to study the resolution and short-term stability of the transducer, and the influence of the transducer linear coefficient on the calibration result was evaluated. Comparative study of the new method and the traditional method shows their uncertainties are similar as of about 5×10-6(k=1) and the calibration results are in good agreement within the uncertainty. An automated calibration instrument for piston gauges was developed based on the new method with automation of pressure control, valve operation and data acquisition. The automated instrument improves the efficiency of the piston gauge calibration.
