Abstract Firstly, a survey of present methods of realizing horizontal guidelines is provided. Secondly, a new method for establishing a high accuracy optical horizontal guideline based on the level surface of a liquid pool is introduced. In particular, the working principle, the measurement method and the procedure for calculating relevant parameters are described. Experimental results show that the stability of the system can reach up to 0.04″.
