Optimization Design of ECT Sensor for Detecting High Moisture Content Contraband in Packages

Abstract

Electrical capacitance tomography （ECT） is a promising method for the detection of high water content contraband in radiation-free packages. In order to improve the detection accuracy， a novel four-sided capacitive sensor configuration is designed for monitoring packages on a conveyor belt. The sensor structure is optimized by changing the number of electrode surfaces and the number of electrodes parameter according to the performance evaluation indexes such as dynamic range index of capacitance measurement， measurement sensitivity， sensitivity uniformity， and three-dimensional imaging effect. The experimental results show that the comprehensive performance of the four-sided 32-electrode layout is superior； for the items with two dielectric constants located in six typical positions within the package， this sensor can make visual judgments to achieve the purpose of rapid identification.
