Abstract An innovative system was designed and constructed to measure flow pulsations of reciprocating pumps used in high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The flow pulsations of a serial pump and a parallel pump were studied under different conditions. The flow pulsation trends along with the changes of flow rates and backpressures of these two kinds of pumps were acquired. It was confirmed that the flow pulsation cycle was closed to the cam motion cycle. A pulsation damper was applied to reduce the flow pulsations to about 10% under 6.5MPa. This system and method were helpful to design and improve HPLC pumps.
