Abstract The basic principle and system composition of two-way optical fiber time transfer (TWOFTT) method is described. The factors influencing the synchronous precision are deduced through analysis of signal transfer link. Asymmetry error of signal two-way transfer link, optical device processing error and time interval measurement error are analyzed. The magnitude of each error factor is calculated through theoretical analysis. The methods for reducing every error are proposed. The time synchronization precision of TWOFTT system can reach subnanosecond magnitude through theoretical analysis and calculation.
